Apple: A Lesson in Purposeful Innovation

Last Friday morning, my wife’s alarm clock went off at 1:50am. As I came to, I noticed the glow of her laptop and the expeditious tapping of her MacBook trackpad. She was doing what apparently 4 million other people were doing that morning … refreshing her browser until the Apple Store was available to pre-order her iPhone 6. Admittedly, I did the same thing to get the iPhone 5 two years ago.

Thirty years ago, Steve Jobs introduced the Macintosh to the world at the Flint Center in Cupertino. The same place Tim Cook emceed the launch event last week for the iPhone 6, Apple Pay and Apple Watch. In our office, a crush of Karters flexed their ability to multi-task by watching the event and inventing all at the same time.

Yes, the product updates proved to be remarkable. Social media monitoring service Crimson Hexagon reported back positive sentiment based the millions of people talking about Apple in social media. 4 million iPhone 6’s were sold within the first 24 hours, doubling the previous record of 2 million iPhone 5’s sold in the first 24 hours two years earlier.

What also proved to be remarkable was the anthem video Apple used to kick off the event. If you take 3 minutes to watch it below, you’re bound to be inspired. With market-leading products at their core, Apple is a purpose-led brand striving to make people’s lives better.

Specifically, the following statements stand out to me:

Here’s to those who have seen things differently. The ones who follow a vision, not a path.

Relentless optimism is what moves the world forward. Keep trusting there is always another way. A bigger way.

You are the difference between the world as it was and the better place it will become. Different is the one thing about us that will always be the same.

Apple’s purposeful approach has led to purposeful innovation that’s changed the world. At GoKart, we have a lot of heart for purposeful innovation. In fact, it’s one of our core values. We believe great ideas are commonplace. Far more rare are ideas that solve problems, are well executed and come from looking at a problem or opportunity from all sides. I would assume Apple believes this too.

Regardless of what you think of Apple, take note of their approach to purposeful innovation. It’s this type of approach that inspires people to set their alarm for the middle of the night to give you money.
